Abbott Laboratories has implemented several major humanitarian programs, taking a comprehensive approach to the multi-faceted problem of HIV/AIDS in the developing world. The company's programs help those infected and those affected by HIV, not only by offering Abbott's AIDS-related products at no profit or free of charge, but also by helping countries improve their capacity to address the pandemic and its social consequences, such as the overwhelming growth in the number of orphans. Abbott will invest nearly $100 million in these programs by 2007.
Some additional examples of health initiatives in which Abbott Laboratories is participating:
•In the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya, through a partnership with Direct Relief
International, Abbott donated products for healthcare settings.
• In Hong Kong, Abbott provided charitable contributions in health and welfare including
cancer link program (providing regular health talks to patient groups), product donations
and disease–specific education to assist with the SARS outbreak.
•In Uruguay, Abbott supports educational initiatives to raise HIV awareness.
• In Colombia and Ecuador, through a partnership with AmeriCares, Abbott donated hospital
products, pharmaceuticals and nutritionals to support relief efforts related to earthquakes in
both countries.
