Statement 30 August 2023

Statement at the 73rd Regional Committee for Africa

By IFPMA

On 30 August, IFPMA submitted a statement at the 73rd Regional Committee for Africa in Gaborone, Botswana on the Framework for sustaining resilient health systems to achieve universal coverage and promote health security, 2023-2030 in the WHO African Region.

The innovative pharmaceutical industry welcomes the Framework and its call for strategic and multi-sectoral partnerships, including with the private sector, to strengthen and sustain health systems in Africa. Achieving health for all in Africa is an imperative. We believe three areas are most critical to achieve UHC and promote health security:

  • Ensure health system readiness and resilience
  • Invest more and invest better
  • Leverage private sector innovation, contributions, and partnerships.

As part of the UHC2030 Private Sector Constituency, the innovative pharmaceutical industry supports the Action Agenda and its rallying calls to governments to achieve UHC for all – and we work in partnership to help create a robust public health ecosystem in Africa that puts people at its heart. Our industry:

  • joins the global health community to realize UHC by delivering innovation and access for medicines and vaccines, for instance through the newly launched AMREF UHC Delivery Lab
  • collaborates toward the operationalization of African Medicines Agency (AMA) through the AMA Treaty Alliance
  • raises awareness against the dangers that substandard and falsified medicines through the Fight the Fakes Alliance
  • contributes to the Partnership for African Vaccine Manufacturing (PAVM) for sustainable local production.
