On the margins of the multistakeholder hearings on antimicrobial resistance, Foreign Policy and IFPMA organized an in-person, high-profile discussion on what it takes to reinforce the response to AMR and the collaborations, reforms and actions that would help drive significant progress in the space.

Antimicrobial resistance has emerged as a significant threat to global health, with the World Health Organization (WHO) classifying it among the top 10 public health threats. The urgency of the issue is underscored by alarming statistics: In 2019, AMR was responsible for 1.27 million deaths and contributed to nearly five million more. It’s a crisis that impacts every aspect of medicine, from routine dental procedures to complex surgeries and cancer treatments. Predictions indicate that by 2050, AMR could cause 10 million deaths annually, surpassing many current leading causes of death.

As the risks from AMR and bacteria that are resistant to currently available antibiotics mount, greater awareness and coordinated action are needed to understand the scale and scope of the threats and streamline investments and interventions that can have impact at scale.

The event featured new data from IFPMA that sheds light on the state of the antibiotic pipeline and future outlook, and served as an important prelude to the multistakeholder hearings on AMR in May and the high-level meeting at the UN General Assembly in September.
